‘The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed‘ (Matthew 13:31 NIV)
Most things in life, start off small. Trees are small when they are young saplings, large ships are made from metal which is mined as ‘ore’ which comes out of the ground in small amounts, and babies are small but become adults.
When we like something, we generally take an interest in it, we like it a little, or it intrigues us at the beginning, we may get more interested in it as time passes, then possibly end up liking it, and partaking of it a lot.
That is a bit like our faith. When we hear about Jesus, we may start by talking to someone who knows about him, or by reading about him in the Bible. We look at his life, what he said, how he said it, and the effect that his words had on those around him.
We may look at our life, and reflect on what we have, and what we do not have, or what is missing.
Jesus actually spoke about this, he talked about the mustard seed,. Jesus said, ‘Though it is the smallest of all seeds… when it grows, it is the largest of garden plants‘ (Matthew 13:32 NIV). Just like our likes, just like our faith!
We all have a God shaped hole deep inside of us, and only he can fill it.
We may try many things to try to live fulfilled lives without him. We may try to fill our lives to give the meaning. We may take up hobbies, such as, painting, swimming, running, or mountain bike riding etc.
But if we look to the Bible, read the words, and look at lives within, real people, who had real lives transformed, and we look at the world and see the same, we too could be transformed, we could become ‘a new person‘ (2 Corinthian 5:17 NLT).
We could be painting an amazing sunset made by our Saviour, we could be swimming in the marvellous waters, filled with life by the Creator of the universe, or we could be riding a bike up a mountain placed there at the beginning of time by the hands of our amazing, awesome wonderful God.
Wow wouldn’t that be fantastic.
As Christians, we look at everything that God created and say, ‘The heavens declare the glory of God‘ (Psalm 19:1 NIV) , we marvel at his works, and we can say, ‘This is the day, this is the day that the Lord has made‘ (Anon) these wonderful words were turned into a beautiful hymn, but the words ring true for all of us who follow the creator of everything, ‘Let us rejoice today and be glad‘ (Psalm 118:24 NIV).
We know God provides us with everything comes from, our help (Psalm 121:1-2), our support (Psalm 94:18) our protection (Psalm 91:11) our strength (Psalm 46:1).
And what will we do with this knowledge?
Me, ‘I will sing to the LORD’s great love forever; with m mouth I will make your faith fullness known‘ (Psalm 89:1 NIV).
‘Praise the LORD. Let everything that has breath praise the LORD. Praise the LORD‘ (Psalm 150:1 & 6).
Be still and wait patiently, for the Lord has heard our cry. As I cry to you Lord, I only desire to do your will. I delight in you Lord, help to make my steps firm, as I commit myself to you. I know in you is the fountain of life, so I declare the following;
I will be still and know your unfailing love.
I will be still and take refuge in the shadow of your wings.
I will be still and let you save my crushed spirit.
I will be still and let you instruct me on the way I should go.
I will be still as you counsel me with love.
I will be still, even as my heart leaps for joy.
I will be still with you Lord, for with you I am never alone.
I am a sinner Lord, but I will be still as you instruct me.
I will be still as you comfort me like no other can.
I will be still as you grant my requests.
I will be still as I look to the heavens and marvel at your glory.
I will be still and know that in the morning I can talk to you again.
But most of all, I will be still and know that you are God.
Lord we have such busy lives, that at times we forget you. We forget to talk to you, we forget to thank you, we forget to praise you. We know that you love us just the same Lord, and for that we are thankful. Help us to be still in your presence Lord, to take time to thank you each and every day, for each and every new day that you bless us with.
Lord we marvel at the universe you created, and are sometimes overwhelmed that you created us and love us. Help us to look at this place you created for us with new eyes, to see you in everything, wherever we are and whatever we are doing, may your name be praise and glorified always. For you are our Great God.
