Sometimes all it takes is a little grace’ (Rowan Atkinson as Walter Goodfellow – Keeping Mum – 2005)

The Merriam Webster online dictionary (accessed 12/07/18 – 22:30) defines grace as;

Unmerited divine assistance given to humans for their regeneration or sanctification, or as, a virtue coming from God, or even as being in a state of sanctification enjoyed through divine assistance’ (

The film ‘“Keeping Mum” is quirky, humorous, and in my opinion, good family entertainment, but equally it is really deep when you think about it, because grace is exactly the answer we are all looking for; it is the answer for everything that we require.

Douglas Adams would have us think;

The Answer to the Great Question. . . Of Life the Universe and Everything. . . Is. . . Forty-two’ (Deep Thought – Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy – p.152 – Pan Books).

42 is not going to help us get far in life, but grace will, grace gives us a hope, ‘we believe that we will be saved through the grace of the Lord Jesus’ (Acts 15:11 ESV).

Grace is by no means a little thing when we consider what our Lord and Saviour went through for us;

 ‘for the joy that was set before him (Jesus) endured the cross’ (Hebrews 12:2 ESV).

When you think about grace, it is not even something that we deserve, why should we deserve it?

While we were still sinners, Christ died for us’ (Romans 5:8 NIV).

Jesus said to his followers, ‘apart from me you can do nothing’ (John 15:5 NIV), so in order to live a life fulfilled, we need Jesus. Yet we do not deserve what he gives us (Romans 5:8).

Paul knew how hard it was to live a godly life, he said to the Roman Christians;

For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do’ (Romans 7:18-19 NIV).

Yet even though he struggled, he knew everything would work out, just as God intended, and because of it, he could, and we can say;

by the grace of God I am what I am’ (1 Corinthians 15:10 NKJV).

So we are the people we are, because God loves us so much, and it is because of that love, that he sent his only Son to earth to die for us (John3:16).

In fact, Jesus was the only person who could do what he did, no-one else could have accomplished what he did;

He came to pay a debt he did not owe, because we owed a debt we could not pay’ (Anon).

That is grace!

What in the end all this comes down to is how we deal in life with the problems we have to face. Sometimes it’s a question of just taking action, of making decisions, of involving others, of finding your resolve and seeing it through. But at other times, it’s about something much less tangible. Sometimes all it takes is a little grace. A little of God’s grace, and all our problems seem to fade away’ (Rowan Atkinson as Walter Goodfellow – Keeping Mum – 2005).

Grace gives us everything, it allows us to, ‘come boldly to the throne [of grace], that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in the time of need’ (Hebrews 4:16 NKJV).

It also gives us, ‘forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace’ (Ephesians 1:7 ESV).

What now?

We have grace even though we do not deserve it (Romans 5:8)

So we are forgiven through grace! (Ephesians 1:7)

We can boldly come before God, because of grace! (Hebrews 4:16)

So what do we do now? Let us have a little bit more wisdom for the Reverend Goodfellow;

Now, should we demand an explanation from our Lord? Question his methods? Or should we merely enjoy the benefits? (Rowan Atkinson as Walter Goodfellow – Keeping Mum – 2005).

Me, I try to enjoy the benefits daily as I walk with God!

What are you going to do?

Grace - John 1 v 16

One day when Heaven was filled with His praises
One day when sin was as black as could be
Jesus came forth to be born of a virgin
Dwelt among men, my example is He
Word became flesh and the light shined among us
His glory revealed

Living, He loved me
Dying, He saved me
Buried, He carried my sins far away
Rising, He justified freely forever
One day He’s coming
Oh glorious day, oh glorious day

One day they led Him up Calvary’s mountain
One day they nailed Him to die on a tree
Suffering anguish, despised and rejected
Bearing our sins, my Redeemer is He
Hands that healed nations, stretched out on a tree
And took the nails for me

Living, He loved me
Dying, He saved me
Buried, He carried my sins far away
Rising, He justified freely forever
One day He’s coming

Glorious Day (Living He Loved Me)
Casting Crowns

downloadFather God, we thank you for your grace and forgiveness towards us, that is given so freely, even though we do not deserve it. Help us to be worthy of the gift that you so freely bestow upon us, help us to live lives that are full of your love and joy, and may we be willing to share all of it with other people that we meet along the way, that we may do as your Son commanded, love others, and go and make disciples of all the world. May your name be glorified in everything that we do.

Thank you Jesus, Amen
