Strength… but not ours!

Be strong and very courageous’ (Joshua 1:7 NIV)

The Merriam Webster online dictionary, defines courage as, ‘mental or moral strength to venture, persevere, and withstand danger, fear or difficulty’ (https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/courage – accessed 20/07/18 – 19:10).

The Cambridge online dictionary defines courage slightly different, as, ‘the ability to control your fear in a dangerous or difficult situation’ (https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/courage – accessed 20/07/18 – 19:15).

Being a Christian is not always an easy thing to be, in the world as we know it, with all its material consumerism, and idols that are ever-present, ready to take our focus from Jesus. We need courage sometimes to speak to people about our belief and faith in Jesus. Jesus never said that it would be an easy thing, to follow in his footsteps, in fact he did say that it could be very difficult.

If anyone would come after me (Jesus), let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me’ (Matthew 16:24 ESV).

God promised the Israelite nation in the Old Testament, through Moses, that he would never leave them, and that he will always be around;

It is the LORD… … He will be with you; he will not leave you or forsake you’ (Deuteronomy 3:8 ESV).

He had also promised that to the early Christians, through Paul’s letter to the Hebrews;

I will never leave you nor forsake you’ (Hebrews 13:5 ESV).

God calls all of us, into his family, because he has a plan for our lives (Jeremiah 29:11) and, when we accept him into our lives, he promises to be with us through thick and thin, just as he said to Joshua, when he (Joshua) took over leading the Israelite nation after the death of Moses.

As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you’ (Joshua 1:5 NIV).

If we are right with God, he will stay with us, and fight for us, just as he did for Joshua when they fought the five kings and won the battle.

Be strong and courageous. This is what the LORD will do to all the enemies’ (Joshua 10:25 NIV).

Whatever we do for God, we need to be courageous. Our mission is to take the message of the Good News of the Gospel to all people that we meet;

Therefore go and make disciples of all nations’ (Matthew 28:19 NIV).

Our mission is to tell all people that we come into contact with, about Jesus, and the Good News of Salvation and Redemption that comes through him. We need to be courageous in our mission.

As Christians, we should be willing to tell people about Jesus. We need to talk about Jesus more, and not be afraid of what people might say to us, or about us. We need to be strong and courageous in all that we do for Jesus.

In his letter to the Corinthian Church, Paul reminded them to be strong for Jesus;

Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men [and women], be strong. Let all that you do be done in love’ (1 Corinthians 16:13 ESV – emphasis mine).

Jesus spoke to his disciples after the feeding of the five-thousand, when they had been on the water during the night, and he had been praying alone. He was walking on the water towards them in the boat, when he called out to them;

Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid’ (Matthew 1:27 & Mark 6:50 NIV).

We have to rely on Jesus for everything that we need. When teaching one day, Jesus said;

apart from me you can do nothing’ (John 15:5 ESV).

We can take strength from knowing that Jesus is with us always (Hebrews 13:5), just as Peter and John did;

they saw the courage of Peter and John’ (Acts 4:13 NIV).

Let us all be always strong and courageous in all that we do for the kingdom of God. What we need to do is;

be strong and take heart and wait for the LORD’ (Psalm 27:14 NIV).

When confusion’s my companion
And despair holds me for ransom
I will feel no fear
I know that You are near

When I’m caught deep in the valley
With chaos for my company
I’ll find my comfort here
‘Cause I know that You are near

My help comes from You
You’re right here, pulling me through
You carry my weakness, my sickness,
my brokenness all on Your shoulders

Your shoulders
My help comes from You
You are my rest, my rescue
I don’t have to see t believe that You’re lifting me up on Your shoulders
Your shoulders

You mend what was once shattered
And You turn my tears to laughter
Your forgiveness is my fortress
Oh Your mercy is relentless

My help is from You
Don’t have to see it to believe it
My help is from You
Don’t have to see it, ’cause I know, ’cause I know it’s true

My help is from You
Don’t have to see it to believe it
My help is from You
Don’t have to see it, ’cause I know, ’cause I know it’s true

downloadFather God, we thank you, that we can take our strength from you. We thank you that as you promised, you are always with us, whatever is happening in and around our lives. Help us to place our trust fully in you, and put our faith completely in you. Lord we know that apart from you we are nothing. Help us to fully rely on you for all of our wants and needs.
Lord we want to hear from you and to know that what we are doing is what is your will. Help us to listen for your voice so that we can know that we are truly doing your will in our lives.

Amen
