Elisha A. Hoffman wrote a hymn that was subsequently published in 1878, with the following words;

Have you been to Jesus for the cleansing pow’r?
Are you washed in the blood of the Lamb?
Are you fully trusting in His grace this hour?
Are you washed in the blood of the Lamb?

                                                (Published 1878 – now Public Domain)

Have you gone to Jesus, are you washed in the blood of the lamb?

When writing to the Hebrew Christians, Paul reminded them, ‘he (Jesus) became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him’ (Hebrews 5:9 NIV). Their obedience would mean that they would be trusting Jesus, therefore, saved, and washed in the blood of their saviour, Jesus Christ, who died for them.

In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation’ (Ephesians 1:13 NKJV). When we believe in Jesus, we become part of a heavenly family, who turn to God, and trust him and let him into all areas of our lives.

Whilst preaching in Rome, Paul said that salvation was for everyone not just the Jewish nation, ‘God’s salvation has been sent to the Gentiles’ (Acts 28:28 NIV).

Salvation is not for a select few, it is for everyone, and it is a gift from God; ‘that whoever believes may have eternal life’ (John 3:15 ESV).

All we need to do to receive salvation is to accept that we have done wrong, that we have sinned and gone off from the path that God has for us;

for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God’ (Romans 3:23 NIV).

Yet even though we have sinned and are sinners, ‘Christ died for us’ (Romans 5:8 NIV); because of the debt that Jesus paid for us, we are, ‘justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus’ (Romans 3:24 NIV).

And how much does our salvation cost us?

Nothing!

Jesus came to pay a debt he did not owe, because we owed a debt that we could not pay.

There is no cost to us; all we need is to have faith;

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith’ (Ephesians 2:8 NIV – emphasis mine).

once for all by his own blood, thus obtaining eternal redemption’ (Hebrews 9:12 NIV).

God’s grace, like all the gifts that he gives us (Galatians 5:22-23) is free, all we need to do, is to use these gifts for the glory of God’s kingdom.

Paul told the Christians in Ephesus, ‘In him (Jesus) we have redemption’ (Ephesians 1:7 NIV). What exactly is redemption? It is, ‘the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace’ (Ephesians 1:7 NIV).

We now have a hope of eternal life with Jesus, for, ‘he has delivered us from the powers of darkness’ (Colossians 1:13 NKJV). Where have we been delivered to ’He has delivered us… … transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins’ (Colossians 1:13-14 ESV).

Jesus said to the disciples; ‘I am the way’ (John 14:6 NIV).

Our sins can be forgiven, by faith in Jesus;

I was a slave in a foreign land, So very far from the Father’s loving hand. He rescued me one glorious day. He brought me out, paid a debt I could not pay. Chorus I am redeemed. I am redeemed. Jesus loosed the chains of sin and set me free’ (Phil Cross – I Am Redeemed).

Seems like all I could see was the struggle
Haunted by ghosts that lived in my past
Bound up in shackles of all my failures
Wondering how long is this gonna last?
Then You look at this prisoner and say to me “Son,
Stop fighting a fight-it’s already been won”

I am redeemed. You set me free
So I’ll shake off these heavy chains and
Wipe away every stain. Now I’m not who I used to be
I am redeemed, I’m redeemed

All my life I have been called unworthy
Named by the voice of my shame and regret
But when I hear You whisper, “Child lift up your head,”
I remember, oh God, You’re not done with me yet

I am redeemed. You set me free
So I’ll shake off these heavy chains and
Wipe away every stain. Now I’m not who I used to be…

Because I don’t have to be the old man inside of me
‘Cause his day is long dead and gone.
Because I’ve got a new name, a new life, I’m not the same
And a hope that will carry me home.

I am redeemed. You set me free
So I’ll shake off these heavy chains and
Wipe away every stain, ’cause I’m not who I used to be

I am redeemed. You set me free
So I’ll shake off these heavy chains and
Wipe away every stain, yeah, I’m not who I used to be.
Oh, God, I’m not who I used to be.
Jesus, I’m not who I used to be.
‘Cause I am redeemed.
Thank God, redeemed.

downloadFather God, we thank you for your gift of our salvation when we turn to you and put our trust in you. Lord help us to put our trust fully in you, that we may put you in control of all areas of our lives. We thank you that because of our trust in you, that the chains that kept us in bondage for sin, have been removed by the loving sacrifice of your Son. Help us to live lives that bring glory to your kingdom, and your name.

Amen
