I have the power! (He-man)

I will teach you about the power of God’ (Job 27:11 NIV)

Power is not all about the physical strength of someone. There is power of the will and mind, or power in what you say and how you say it. You could even demonstrate power of control, in your actions, and how you treat people.

The Merriam Webster online dictionary, defines power as;

Physical might, or

Mental or moral efficiency, and

Possession of control, authority or influence over others’ (https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/power – accessed 04/08/18 – 09:27).

Jesus may or may not have had physical strength or might, we don’t see that in what is written; although he was in situations where he was threatened, he never reacted with a show of physical strength; he was never in a situation where he had to use his own bodily strength, he trusted his heavenly Father for all his needs.

When we trust God to fight our battles, we do not need our own physical might, God is our strength. The Psalmist David knew this to be true, ‘The LORD is the strength of his people’ (Psalm 28:8 ESV).

Power can just as easily be shown in the authority that someone has. Jesus knew that he had been given authority from his Father, for he prayed;

that your Son may glorify you. For you granted him authority’ (John 17:2 NIV).

Efficiency is all about being competent and well organised. Jesus definitely had mental and moral efficiency.

Jesus travelled around most of the time during his ministry, and confidently preached in various areas, and many times. He knew the scriptures well, and showed this on many occasions, and at each place, there were similar responses from the crowds;

they were astonished at his teaching; for his word was with authority’ (Luke 4:32 RV1885).

the Son of Man has authority on earth’ (Matthew 9:6 NIV).

There have been many songs and hymns written about the power of Jesus, and what he has done for us, such as;

There is power in the name of Jesus’ (Noel Richards – 1955 – today)

There is power in the precious name of Jesus, Jesus’ (Sandy Patti – 1956 – today)

Of Jesus there is power in his name’ (Lincoln Brewster – 1971 – today).

We know that there was power in Jesus, he preached and taught with authority, but even more than that, we know that he had power over natural elements;

Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake’ (Matthew 14:25 NIV).

The Israelite nation in the Old Testament knew and experienced the awesome power of God, when they left Egypt (Exodus 14:15-22), when travelling during the wilderness years and in need of water (Numbers 20:8-11).

The Psalmist Ethan the Ezrahite wrote, ‘You rule the raging of the sea; when its waves rise, you still them’ (Psalm 89:9 ESV).

There were many times that the Israelite nation experienced the power of God during their exodus from Egypt, and the time of the Judges. Again and again, the Israelite nation turned from God and suffered, and then God in his mercy delivered them time after time.

The Jewish nation during Jesus’ time, would have also known about the power of God, but were now witnessing the might of God through the life of Jesus, ‘The men were amazed and asked, “What kind of man is this? Even the wind and waves obey him!”’ (Matthew 8:27 NIV).

The most important thing for us to remember is that he has the power, not only to perform miracles, such as turning water into wine (John 2:1-10), and healing people (Luke 5:12-14 & Mark 8:22-26), Jesus has the power to save us. Jesus saves us by what he has done for us, in his death and resurrection.

We trust Jesus, and know that he has power, and we also know that the power he has means that we will be with him in our eternal life, and that ultimately;

at the name of Jesus every knee should bow’ (Philippians 2:10 NIV).
