Family Matters!

Isn’t there someone else you could annoy?’ (Eddie – Family Matters)

Family Matters’ (W. Bickley & M. Warren – 1989 – 2004) was a family comedy television series that showed many of the different issues that a family could have to deal with, and generally everything ended well.

Michael J Fox is attributed as saying, ‘Family is not an important thing, it is everything’.

Family should matter to everyone within the family, and everyone that is associated with them.

In the Old Testament, family is listed often; Adam’s family line is listed (Genesis 5:1) Noah’s family, (Genesis 6:9). Other families are also listed within the scriptures (Genesis 11:10 & 27, 25:12 & 19).

We should remember how important family is!

Now we trust Jesus and are known as a Christian, we are part of the largest family of all. We belong to the world-wide family of believers, and as a family of believers we should look after each other, we should;

do good to everyone – especially those in the family of faith’ (Galatians 6:10 NLT).

If anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially the members of his household, ha has denied his faith’ (1 Timothy 5:8 ESV).

Our earthly family can cause us lots of problems if we do not have God at the centre of our relationship. But even as Christians we are not perfect, and can slip up causing problems between people, such as arguments and disagreements; but we should be, ‘bearing with one another, and forgiving one another’ (Colossians 3:13 NKJV).

As a father or husband, we should, lead our family in the way that we live, the way that we trust Jesus in all that we do, the way we model our lives after Jesus;

Love our [your] wives, just as Christ loved the church’ (Ephesians 5:25 NIV),

love your wives and do not be harsh with them’ (Colossians 3:19 NIV).

do not provoke your children to wrath, but bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord’ (Ephesians 6:4 NKJV).

As a wife, you should love our family with all of our heart, we should be virtuous and upright, strong in the Lord, wise and loving (Proverbs 31:10-31). You should also trust, love and let your husband lead you, in the same way that you let Jesus lead you (Colossians 3:18).

A wife of noble character is her husband’s crown’ (Proverbs 12;4 NIV).

Your wife will be like a fruitful vine’ (Psalm 128:3 NIV).

As a child you should look to your parents for the way you should live, in the same way that your parents look to Jesus;

Honour your father and mother, that your days may be long’ (Exodus 20:12 NKJV).

My son [daughter], keep your father’s commandment and forsake not your mother’s teaching’ (Proverbs 6:20 ESV).

obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord’ (Colossians 3:20 NIV).

Families can be complicated, hard to deal with, and cause all manner of problems. Families belong with each other, and they are part of a whole. As Jesus taught us, we should love them no matter what

What we should remember is that our family is a gift from God;

Children are a heritage from the LORD’ (Psalm 127:3 NIV).

We need to trust in what the Bible tells us, follow Jesus, and live our lives as he would have. All that we have is given to us by God, but all that we can leave our children is the legacy of our lives.

How we trusted Jesus in all areas.

How we lived and loved like Jesus.

How we treated our family, both members of our direct family and the family of the church.

‘A good person leaves and inheritance for their children’s children’ (Proverbs 13:22 NIV).

Family

You didn’t ask for this
Nobody ever would
Caught in the middle of this dysfunction
It’s your sad reality
It’s your messed up family tree
And all your left with all these questions

Are you gonna be like your father was and his father was?
Do you have to carry what they’ve handed down?

No, this is not your legacy
This is not your destiny
Yesterday does not define you
No, this is not your legacy
This is not your meant to be
I can break the chains that bind you

I have a dream for you
It’s better than where you’ve been
It’s bigger than your imagination
You’re gonna find real love
And you’re gonna hold your kids
You’ll change the course of generations

No, this is not your legacy
This is not your destiny
Yesterday does not define you
No, this is not your legacy
This is not your meant to be
I can break the chains that bind you

‘Cause you’re my child
You’re my chosen
You are loved
You are loved

And I will restore
All that was broken
You are loved
You are loved

And just like the seasons change
Winter into spring
You’re bringing new life to your family tree now
Yes you are
You are

Oh, this will be your legacy
This will be your destiny
Yesterday did not define you
Oh, this will be your legacy
This will be your meant to be
I can break the chains that bind you

And just like the seasons change
Winter into spring
You’re bringing new life to your family tree now

downloadFather God, we thank you for families, even though at times they may appear to give us nothing but trouble. We know that all of them are a gift from you, and that you know each and every one of us. Help us to love them, and guide them in the right ways that they should go. Lord we know that we all need you to show us the path that we should go, in order that we may fulfil the plan that you have for our lives. Help us all to live our lives that you may receive the glory, and that your kingdom will grow.

Amen
